broken speedo

I went to a small repair shop out of town after my speedometer broke in the middle of my trip. The guy changed the speedo drive and the speedo cable. It worked fine because I got to see my speed again but after a couple of days, the needle started flickering too much!

I can no longer return to the same shop because it's almost 100 miles away and I'm back home. I'm thinking of doing the repair on my own before I spend another penny at a repair shop. Any idea what I should check?
 
You can try to use a lighter oil for now, I think what happens is that its winding up and then releases with grease that may be causing the flickering. Or you can also check the cable that connects the new speedometer to the instrument, there could be errors when the guy did the replacement.
 
Bummer about that flickering speedo after the repair! since it worked for a bit, it might be a loose connection somewhere along the new cable or at the speedo head itself
 
Since you don't want to go back to the original shop, I guess your next step might be to get a second opinion from your trusted mechanic.let them know what was done and the current issue. They might be able to diagnose it more quickly.

I'd begin by checking the cable for any kinks or wear. A little white lithium grease or cable lube can help, too. Also, make sure the cable is set up nicely without any sharp bends. Sometimes, loose connections at either end can cause flickering as well. I had the same problem once, and just fixing the cable did the trick for me
 
My speedo's acting up! It was jumpy, so I swapped the cable, which fixed it for a bit. Now, above 40 mph, it's wobbly again.

Before I hit up a shop, any ideas what to check? Could the drive unit be the problem, or is it the gauge itself?
