need some help with some symptoms

The commando I found wasn't in the best shape possible, but I managed to firte it up and it runs decently well, but there is a problem. I'm getting some weird noise when in gear, almost like a supercharger whine and it doesn't go into gear quite smoothly. I was thinking the bearing on the mainshaft, but should I think of the worst that the transmission is gone?

Considering the noise and the rough shifting, the mainshaft bearing could definitely be a culprit. That said, it might also be something like worn synchros or even just a little dirt or debris in the transmission. It's probably a good idea to check the bearing first

It could be the mainshaft bearing, but if it's whining and not shifting smooth, don't rule out the tranny
