I found some older posts about people buying sprague clutches from AliExpress with 18 dog-bones, has anyone used one long-term?

Not too long ago, I decided to try one of those sprags from AliExpresss since CNW hadn't rolled out their upgraded parts at the time. I paired it with my old, worn-out components, and to my surprise, it's been holding up really well since then. I've asked around and haven't come across any failures yet. However, if your budget allows, I'd say the CNW setup is definitley the smarter choice for the long run since it addresses all the wear points effectively

Thanks for sharing your experience! It is good to hear the AliExpress sprag's working well, I'll keep the CNW setup in mind for long-term durability, but the budget's a bit tight right now

From what I've gathered, they work okay for a while but don't have OEM level durability, take the 18 dog bone setup is cool, but the materials and machining can be hit or miss really, just not something I would recommend in the long run

I've been running one of those AliExpress sprags for a few months now and there are no issues yet but that's on my other bike. I think yeah it's not OEM quality, but for the price, it's doing the job. Stay safe, man.

you really, really need to be careful with critical drivetrain components like a sprague clutch, especially from generic overseas suppliers. The 'dog-bones' (sprags) themselves, and especially the metal they're made of, along with the cage, need to be super high quality with proper heat treatment. If those fail, it's not just a minor inconvenience, it can leave you stranded or cause more expensive damage to other parts of your drivetrain or starter system. 'Longterm' on these can be a huge gamble. some might last, others could fail prematurely or catastrophically

It's amazing how many people are agains these Chinese cheap parts that end up doing a good job. Don't get me wrong, I'm part of those and I'd really like to know how long it lasts. Hope you remember to give a ping here after a while?

I tried a cheap sprague clutch on my friend's quad once, thinking we got a steal. It seemed fine at the start, but it broke down in less than a year and wrecked the starter gear. It's not worth the risk unless you're sure about the quality of the parts
